4 DISCOVERY

The Discovery Engine of ECView Pro Network Management System is

primarily responsible for discovering the topology of the network, that is,

all the elements that are residing in the network. In addition, it also

gathers basic information such as the device’s IP address, MAC address,

sysOID, system Description and other information about the devices it has

discovered. The gathered information is used to layout a graphical design

in the mapping feature of the ECView Pro platform to represent the

network topology to show how they are connected, and to simply let you

see the status of each device in the network.

The Discovery Engine, apart from discovering IP addresses in the network,

is also designed to discover CDP, LLDP and SNMP enabled devices in the

network.

The Discovery Engine, apart from discovering managed (SNMP enabled)

devices in the network, is also designed to discover unmanaged (non

ECView Bridge algorithm to generate the topology.

◆ Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) is primarily used to obtain protocol

addresses of neighbouring devices. CDP is media and protocol-

independent, and runs on all Cisco-manufactured equipment including

routers, bridges, access servers, and switches.

◆ The Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) is a media independent

protocol intended to be run on all IEEE 802 devices, allowing a LLDP

agent to learn higher layer management reachability and connection

endpoint information from adjacent devices. LLDP runs on all 802

media. Additionally the protocol runs over the data-link layer only,

allowing two systems running different network layer protocols to learn

about each other.

◆ ECView Pro Bridge Discovery is a proprietary algorithm that

discovers all SNMP enabled and unmanaged devices in the network.

◆ Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) allows computers

running Windows operating systems to be discovered in the network.
