SNMP Trap Receiver
– 74 –
Specifications in preliminary manuals
are subject to change without notice.
PRELIMINARY
SNMP TRAP RECEIVER
SNMP traps are a powerful network management tool that alerts network
administrators to potential network security violations or disruptions such
as authentication violations, network equipment failure, network
configuration changes, equipment self-test results, and excessive error
conditions. These traps are sent to the ECView Pro Server and the received
traps are shown as events in the Event Viewer of the ECView Pro Platform.
SNMP VERSIONS
ECView Pro can retrieve data from devices using SNMPv1, SNMPv2c, and
SNMPv3. Each version provides different capabilities:
SNMPv1 — This original version of SNMP provides a simple means for
retrieving data. Its security is provided through community strings that
act like a password to allow or deny access to the information in the
device. The Read-Only community string gives permission for the client
to read and modify data. All data transmissions (including the
community string) were sent unencrypted.
SNMPv2cFrom its original version, the SNMPv2c comes with
additional and more efficient methods of requesting data. It has added
new data types (such as 64-bit counters) where the monitoring system
can get more accurate data from the device. SNMPv2c uses the same
community string system as SNMPv1
SNMPv3 — With the same data retrieval facilities as SNMPv2c, the
SNMPv3 has added a more secure method of retrieving data that
provides authentication information (so the device knows whether to
respond to the query or not). It has also added a privacy function that
encrypts the entire transmission so that eavesdroppers cannot discern
the data from the device.
SNMP COMMUNITY STRING
The SNMP Read-only community string is like a user ID or password that
gives an access on the statistics of a switch, router or other managed
devices. The NMS sends the community string along with all SNMP
requests. If the community string is correct, the device responds with the
requested information. If the community string is incorrect, the device
simply discards the request and does not respond.
N
OTE
:
SNMP Community strings are used only by devices which support
SNMPv1 and SNMPv2c protocol. SNMPv3 uses username/password
authentication, along with an encryption key.
